12/08/2008 - 20:00
Etc/GMT-5

The third meeting of the fall 2008 semester.

WSU LUG welcomes Dr. Adam J. Lincoln and his presentation "A Holiday Server Feast"

While desktop applications cover a very broad range of functionality, there are lots of useful things that operate as services under Linux. File and print sharing, remote applications, and web services can be as helpful inside your home network as they are over the greater internet. Also, cool stuff like bitlbee, which lets you use your favorite IRC client as an instant messenger client, runs as a service. You do not need more than one computer to take advantage of these, and laptops can benefit as much as desktops. A rundown of server applications and configurations will be described, focusing on how to make your home computers easier to use and more powerful.

Where: WSU Campus: 0162 Old Main (enter building off Warren; room is in hall between two Warren entrances)

When: Monday December 8th, 2008 @ 6:30pm

October Presentation Meeting : Dr. Potoff presents, "Everything I Needed to Know About Computer Security, I Learned from Google.

10/30/2008 - 18:00
10/30/2008 - 20:00
Etc/GMT-5

The Second meeting of the Fall 2008 semester.

WSU LUG welcomes Dr. Potoff and his presentation "Everything I Needed to Know About Computer Security, I Learned from Google."

20 years ago, security through obscurity was the mode of operation for most academic research groups. 10 years ago, it was still common to find departments running mail servers with open relays. Today, running an open relay or unsecured NIS server is likely to result in a compromised computer in less than 24 hours. In this talk, I discuss open source security tools and other information freely available through common search engines, such as Google.

Where: WSU Campus - College of Engineering : Conference room 1145

When: Thursday October 30th, 2008 @ 6:00pm

Informal (Barely Related) Get-togethers

If you're one that follows this site or the RSS feed, but doesn't keep up with the mailing list (shame on you), there's a discussion going on about a very informal get-together sort of thing on Thursday, May 15, at 8pm, with the possibility of it becoming a regular thing. Whether or not it's a regular thing depends entirely upon whether or not people feel like coming regularly.
