New to our group?

Welcome to the WSULUG web page. If you heard about us at Student Organization Day, or overheard someone's conversation about us, received a flier with this web address, or googled us, please read on to find out what we're all about.

Chances are good you learned about computers growing up, and you've used either a computer with Microsoft Windows, or a computer made by Apple. These computers run software that costs you money. This software does not allow you to share copies with your friends. Because only one or two companies make the software, you have to take it on their word that the software works and will keep you and your information safe.

But have you ever had a virus? Or spyware? Or those pop-up ads that come out of nowhere when you turn on your computer and drive you nuts? Are you tired of your computer crashing when you're in the middle of something important, like a term paper?

These companies make you pay hundreds of dollars for software that is often not safe, not stable, and not free.

Free? Do you like the sound of that?

Free as in zero dollars? Yes. There is other software that will cost you nothing to use.

This free software will also allow you - in fact, encourages you - to give copies to your friends and family, and no one has to pay a cent.

This free software will let you make any changes to it that you'd like.

This free software will allow you to not rely on the broken promises of one or two big companies - instead you will know that hundreds, or thousands, of talented people have volunteered their time to make this software, and that an open community means that honest people are checking it to keep you safe.

We like the sound of this free software - we call it Free and Open Source Software.

Our group is named after Linux, an operating system that's free and open source. We use and promote all free and open source software.

Do you like the sound of that? Then join us! There are many ways to participate:

- Join the email mailing list! Feel free to introduce yourself to the group. We're a friendly bunch.
- Send email to the WSULUG officers at WSULUG@gmail.com - ask anything you want!
- Come to a meeting - see the blue box at the top of the page for the date and time of our next meeting
- If you know what IRC is, join us on channel #waynestatelug on irc.freenode.net

We're here to help. There are tons of things for you to try and learn, starting with the newest beginner - and it's all free.
