Frequently Asked Questions

What exactly is the point of the group?
In short, the purpose of the Wayne State University Linux Users Group is to support and promote the use of Linux, UNIX and other Open Source technologies at Wayne State University and the surrounding community.

Additionally, the group provides for a network of communication among interested people at Wayne State. Our membership spans a wide variety, everything from theater grad students to computer science undergrads to employees to professionals in the area with no other connection to the university. The one thing in common is an interest in our field, and the group allows them all to interact whereas they probably never otherwise would have met.

No, I mean, what do you do?
Oh, that. Well, our main activities are our meetings. There's two a month, one of which is a presentation on a Linux or open source topic. Find out more about our meetings at our meeting page.

Also, while they're not always "group activities", many of our members go to various conventions and conferences, and being in the group is a great way to find a ride, carpool, and generally have someone to hang out with on the way there, and at the place. Events that have had WSULUG members as attendees include Penguicon, the Ontario Linux Fest, the Ohio Linux Fest, and several more.

Can you guys help me install Linux?
Sure thing. Just use the contact page or IRC to get in touch with us, and ask. We're more than happy to help get you started.

Why do you all hate Microsoft?
Everyone's entitled to an opinion, but we're not an anti-Microsoft group. We simply are enthusiastic about the open source philosophy and love our operating system. Quoth Linus Torvalds himself: "It's not really about Linux vs. Microsoft. It's about something you really, really have fun with and lets others have fun as well".

Can I join the group?
Please do. University requirements force us to limit our membership to 80% students, so if you're not a student, there might be minor complications, but we'll never turn anyone away from participating. The only difference between being an "official member" and not, really, is voting.
