WSULUG maintains an IRC channel on the Freenode IRC network. Feel free to join and chat with us about anything related to linux, open source, computers, and whatever else. Our channel is called #waynestatelug on irc.freenode.net
We also hold many of our business/planning meetings on this IRC channel. Check out the upcoming events along the right hand side of the page for more details.
Popular IRC clients for Linux include irssi, Xchat, Konversation, and ircII, and many instant messenger clients support the protocol, such as Kopete and Gaim.
If you're running Windows, we currently recommend mIRC, even though it's not open source - mostly because it's what we have some experience with, and it's pretty newbie friendly. We may update this recommendation in the future.
If you're on a computer that you can't install stuff on (say, in a campus computer lab), you can try a web-based IRC client. We currently recommend Mibbit, because it lets you choose any server and it seems to be stable. If all you want to do is join our IRC channel, you can just click here.
(Want to do it manually or play around with Mibbit? Just click the Mibbit link above, choose Freenode from the IRC pulldown menu, enter #waynestatelug for the channel, pick a nickname, click the Go button, and you should be good to go. Click the bottom-most white portion to enter text, and start chatting! You can also click "Live Help Channel in the upper-right corner of the page for help, once you've signed in. It won't be us, but hopefully someone will be able to help you use Mibbit.)
Each of these clients has help pages and Frequently Asked Questions on their websites, so we won't go through all the details here. Instead, if you're not sure what to do, and you're using irssi, Xchat, Konversation, and ircII, or mIRC, just try the commands
/server irc.freenode.net
/join #waynestatelug
in the main window. Once you're in the channel, we can help you from there.
Also, don't hesitate to email the listserv (see the blue banner on the main WSULUG page for a link to join), or the WSULUG officers email address if you have any questions.
Please note: There is a channel on the network called #wsulug. It's not us. That channel belongs to the Washington State University Linux Users Group, and while they're very nice people, they're not us, so please don't be confused.
